Rural Communities Seek Property Development Assistance

Many rural communities across the UK are currently concerned that the British countryside is becoming increasingly more like ‘part dormitory, part theme park and part retirement home’ due to the governments recent reforms on the development of more affordable housing…

During his report, Rural Coalition chairman Matthew Taylor, announced that the government’s proposed ‘Community Right to Build’ scheme is not the right approach to ensuring that rural communities receive the new property developments they so desperately require.

Instead, they believe that elected parish councils should be given the power to approve small property developments – by using a localised planning regime – to ensure that these properties meet the needs of all local residents and not just a handful.

Yet, this suggested alternative looks unlikely to happen anytime soon, since the publication of Housing Ministers new property scheme…

In his plan Grant Shapps announced that rural housing schemes will be able to bypass England’s existing planning system should 90% of local residents vote in favour of them.

However, many associations including the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the Local Government Association are concerned that such a move will lead to a break down in rural communities, with locals becoming divided as they review the benefits of these property developments…

Because of this, Taylor feels the government needs to consider the impact of these property developments on both a local and national level to ensure that rural communities can experience the sustainable future they desire.
