Tenants To Receive Better Council House Deals?
UK Housing Minister Grant Shapps has recently divulged plans to give local councils more financial freedom to better serve tenants after he described the existing council house finance system as ‘a mess’…
By taking the step to modify the current Housing Revenue Account subsidy system, Shapps feels councils could then be better equipped to supply more beneficial housing deals to the 4 million property owners currently on the social housing list.
For the moment however, Shapps is still in the midst of convincing councils to respond to this proposal, so he can begin implementing a new self-financing system that will allow them to not only keep all the rents they collect but keep receipts for land and property sales they put through.
Yet it is easy to see why some councils are reluctant to respond. In exchange for this much needed financial freedom, councils will have to take on additional housing debt – a debt which many are not keen on facing in the current economic climate…
Discussing his plans further, Shapps revealed that for too long local councils have been prevented from fulfilling the needs of their local communities because their hands have been tied by rules and regulations.
That is why by relieving them of this barrier and giving them more control, councils can use this new system to make better, more long term decisions which can benefit tenants and property owners alike.
